Poker players know that they should give something back every now and then and the All In For Hope Celebrity Poker charitable event is a great way to do that. The tournament is organized on a yearly basis by City of Hope, a foundation that fights for the finding of a cure for cancer and other deadly diseases. By bringing players together in a major tournament they hope to raise enough money to fund their projects while exploring new possibilities in their research.

The All In For Hope Celebrity Poker tournament is scheduled for May 31 and it will attract a mix of poker professionals and celebrities. Anyone who wants to support the cause is welcomed to join and with the buy-in being of only $500 this is hardly a highroller’s event reserved to the select few who can afford it. The beneficiaries are Hope Research and Medical Center and the National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, some of the most reputable institutes fighting cancer.

In order for more money to be raised, the organizers made it possible for players who suffer an untimely elimination to rebuy for only $250. The most successful players will compete for a place at the World Series of Poker as this is the main prize in the All In For Hope Celebrity Poker event. The winner will have to pledge to donate 25% of the money made in Las Vegas at the most important poker tournament in the world, with the amounts earned to be used for funding cancer research.

There are many poker players out there who couldn’t have afforded to buy in at the WSOP, so this is the best chance they’ve got to play among the best poker players worldwide. The fact that the money raised will serve a good cause is merely the icing on the cake, but for others this is everything that matters. Not all of those who are expected to sign up for the even organized by the City of Hope are aiming the prize and some will be there merely for the chance of helping others.

Hollywood celebrities have made an appearance in the past and some of them are expected to return for this edition, so those who sign up could stumble upon some of their favorite actors. Among those who have confirmed their presence already are Tony Danza and Jamie Gold, but with the event beginning on May 31st, there is plenty of time for new names to be added on the list. Among the sponsors for this event, there are names such as TW Steel and Medallion who will offer champagne to participants and expensive watches to those who make it to the final table.

This poker variant incorporates five of the most popular games and what makes it special is that all of them are played in the same tournaments or cash games. Players need to be equally adapt at playing all five variants if they are to prevail, and mastering only one or two of them can only carry one that far. Texas hold ‘em and Omaha are the most popular types and it comes as no surprise that they are the ones that represent the highlight of any HORSE event.

Many of the players who are familiar with these types of poker make the transition to HORSE seeking adrenaline rush or willing to expand their expertise. Razz and seven card stud poker are less popular and more difficult to play, especially for those who are playing HORSE for the first time. Given the sheer complexity of each game and the amount of time that it takes for one to become proficient, it is easy to explain why most HORSE games are dominated by elderly players.

It is always better to take it one step at a time and extract the most you can from your game of choice before moving to the next one. At least in theory a player should only make the transition to HORSE after they feel very comfortable playing each and every single game. What frequently happens is that many of those who rush through the learning stages and hope to make it as soon as possible to a HORSE table fail miserably. Their best case scenario is to lose a minimal amount, before returning to the poker game that they are best at and make a decent living there.

Even those who have good reasons to be confident in their ability of playing each game that makes HORSE so popular, should not overextend. There is always the chance of being pit against players who are particularly good at one type of poker and lose a sizable percentage of your stack in a few hands. When playing a HORSE tournament it is important to pay attention to what the other players are doing, and which is the time when they shift from passive to aggressive gear.

Given the fact that they lack the expertise to be just as competitive at all games, many wait patiently for their favorite game and try to push things into overdrive. An all-around HORSE player feels comfortable at all five games and will slowly build a bankroll, by taking advantage of his opponents hesitations.

There are many strategies that work equally well in live and online poker, and many of them have interesting names that are easy to keep in mind. The Scandinavian float bet is an excellent example, and although the name is fancy the explanation for why it is called this way is quite simple. The author at http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/183/midstakes-mtt/scandinavian-float-974896/ does more than explaining how the strategy works but also clarifies the origin of the name.

Essentially this is a standard float bet play that is employed on the flop or turn, and it is called like this because some of the most successful players employing it are Scandinavians. While there is less to its name than meets the eye, the play itself is very effective in both cash games and tournaments and should be mastered by aspiring Texas hold ‘em players. The purpose is induce the idea that you are holding a monster hand and have slow played it on the previous street, in an attempt to lure the opponent into a trap. It is a double-edged sword so it has to be used with moderation, otherwise it can easily backfire.

Against tight opponents and players who are more likely to fold when facing aggression, it is worth calling on the flop or turn instead of resorting to a continuation bet. Even if your hand is of moderated strength and doesn’t have great chances to improve, the Scandinavian float bets can help you take down the pot. If you don’t hit anything on the next street and you are reluctant to invest even more, the float bet can help you cut down your losses by giving you extraordinary fold equity.

A player who sees his opponents calling on the flop after raising pre-flop, has good reasons to assume that he is being set up and will be extra careful on the turn. The same goes for a Scandinavian float bet made on the turn, but in this case you need to be careful not to make your opponents pot committed. This is one of the common mistakes that beginners frequently do, as they don’t adjust their strategy according to the size of both stacks. All to often, players who don’t actually think that they have the better hand on the river choose to call simply because they are reluctant to throw down a decent hand.

The Scandinavian float shouldn’t be dismissed as a plane bluff, because it is supposed to be used only when the player holds a decent hand that has the potential to improve dramatically. On the other hand, when you need to fire the last bullet you are basically bluffing your opponent, while counting on his power of accurate observation. Slow playing is not what it used to be and this means that players are more likely to use float bets than to stand still with a monster hand. Either way, this play remains effective at all stakes as long as players don’t abuse the game mechanics.

Poker News posted an interesting article about Jerry Yang, a former WSOP main event champion whose property is about to be sold by the IRS. At http://www.pokernews.com/news/2013/03/jerry-yang-s-2007-wsop-main-event-bracelet-and-other-propert-14497.htm those interested will find out how he managed to squander a significant part of the money won back in 2007 and failed to pay his taxes. After that stunning success, the poker player failed to win any event and the money made from poker decreased dramatically.

Surprising or not, the Internal Revenue Service of the United States found out that Mr. Yang was also delinquent on his taxes. Under the authority in Internal Revenue Code section 6331 the IRS will put some of his property including the celebrated Corum bracelet up for auction. This jewelry was awarded to Jerry Yang for winning the World Series of poker main event, in addition to the prize money worth in excess of $8 million. It is hard to believe that the poker winner failed to remember or was completely unaware of his legal obligations, although he now claims that the IRS actions took him by surprise.

United States Department of treasury announced a list of objects that will be subject to auctioning, and in addition to the aforementioned bracelet there are also some expensive watches, necklaces, rings and other jewelry. The smallest amount for which those interested can hope to acquire some of this property stands at slightly more than $6000, but it would come as no surprise if some of the most valuable pieces will sell for tens of thousands of dollars.

Poker News cites sources claiming that the total federal tax lien is more than half $1 million and the IRS is en route to recovering the entire amount. Despite the fact that recent years were not so kind to Jerry Young and his poker career took a turn for the worse, he still holds enough valuables to extinguish the debt. The auction for all of the aforesaid property will be held on April 4 and the location where the sale will take place is an IRS building at 4330 Watt Avenue, Sacramento, California 95821.

Practice makes perfect and the game of poker is every bit as demanding as any other sport, with talent playing only a minor role. While you still need to have those few attributes that separate successful poker players from average ones, if you don’t practice hard enough you will never reach your full potential. More hands mean more opportunities to discern between various poker situations, and eventually more money because regardless of stakes the potential profits increase.

At least in theory it is recommended to play as many hands as possible, and only move to the next limits after you reach a predetermined quota. This doesn’t mean that players should jump over the fence and try to push their poker career into overdrive by playing long hours. The decision of when to pull the ripcord and the elements that should be factored in when making this choice, are of critical importance. Basically there are two distinct situations when players have to choose how long their poker sessions will be and which elements will bring them to an end.

One case is not even remotely linked with the player’s performance at the poker table, as the length of the session is predetermined and is not influenced about what happens in-game. The decision to quit after one, two or more hours should be based on the physical endurance and ability to focus, therefore the length of a poker session can vary depending on players. The advantage of setting the borders in advance, is that you limit the role that emotions play and you don’t put yourself into harm’s way. Beginners are the main beneficiaries of this strategy, because they’re most vulnerable to going on tilt.

The second scenario depends exclusively on whether the player wins or loses, and the decisive factor in choosing when to step down is the amount. Most players have a vague idea about when it is time to call it a night, but very few set up strict rules and then follow them religiously. A stoploss limit is particularly important because many players end up losing all their money in a single dramatic poker session. They don’t know when to quit and in their attempt of chasing losses they dig themselves further into the hole.

There are very few occasions when someone who is suffering a lengthy losing streak claws his way out of it by playing more hands or by suddenly raising the limits. In an overwhelming majority of cases, they lose considerably more than they would have if the poker session would’ve ended abruptly. Losing a couple of buy-ins should be sufficient to pull the ripcord and a break is always a good idea when things don’t seem to be going your way. It is always possible for bad luck or better opponents to be the cause for your lack of positive results, but dismissing the possibility of weak plays is a mistake.

The idea of stoploss limits makes perfect sense to most poker players, but much fewer know where to set the boundaries when it comes to winning. It is just as difficult to sit out from the poker table when you are riding a hot streak, as it is to back off when losing a significant amount. On one hand, it makes sense to persevere and try to capitalize on your dominant position at the poker table when you are winning. There is a good reason for you to be the better player, so it would be a shame to quit and miss out on the opportunity to win larger amounts.

The danger of lingering more than you planned at the poker table is that even when you are winning, you are vulnerable to the same problems generated by fatigue. Many players are tempted to overplay their cards and expect the winning streak to grow on by its own volition regardless of how they play. Given the fact that their stack has been boosted by what appears to be easy money, they no longer appreciate its worth and start gambling. A loss is a loss even when you are not technically losing your own money, because these unexpected gains should be saved to offset future losses and strengthen your bankroll.

As a hybrid between tournaments and cash games, sit ‘n goes are the ideal form of Texas hold ‘em for new players who don’t have a sizable bankroll. They can’t weather variance but they’re not suited to play at cash games either, so sit ‘n goes represent their best choice. When you are playing these mini tournaments you need to keep in mind that large gains are impossible, and you are setting yourself on a crash course to grinding. It takes a lot of practice and patience, to boost your bankroll at such tables but the good news is that you are not taking high chances and don’t get exposed to significant losses.

Depending on what type of sit ‘n go you choose to play in, more or less players will cash in and the bubble stage can be shorter or longer. At shorthanded tables, only the first two places end in the money and that’s why there is no room for error in the early stages of the event. Assuming you lose a sizable pot while the blinds are still small, you need to take advantage of any coin flip opportunity you’ve got to shove your chips.

In standard sit ‘n goes featuring 10 players, the first three will end in the money but there is a serious discrepancy in the money they receive. Quite often the first place receives more than the next two players combined, which explains why it is reasonable to aim high. Playing sit and goes for value implies that you are not focusing on short-term gains, but play the long game and always target sustainable wins. It is better to fail while trying to win an event than constantly settle for the third place, because on the long run those few times that you win will result in more money earned.

Things change in multitable sit ‘n goes, where due to the fact that many players buy-in, the event becomes very similar to a standard tournament. You have more time to plan your actions and even if you make a false step while the blinds are low, you have sufficient time to rebound and make a run for the money. This doesn’t mean that players should be reckless in the early stage of the sit ‘n go, but they can afford to play more speculative hands and get involved in more pots than they would normally do.

Tight aggressive players are virtually everywhere, so regardless of the stakes you playing at, it is of critical importance to know how to handle them. The TAG category is very broad but there are many different types of tight aggressive players that have adopted slightly different styles of playing. Three types stand out from the crowd and deserve a second look, because these are the ones that beginners are very likely to encounter when making their baby steps online.

The nits are unsuccessful hybrids between rocks and tight aggressive players, but they bear more similarities to the first category. Their main trait is that they play very few hands and they prefer to fold their cards whenever they are pit against a difficult decision. While they don’t identify themselves as rocks, the range of cards that they play pre-flop is not significantly wider and they harbor the same attitude on the subsequent streets.

A nit will fold the overwhelming majority of cards dealt to him, and will not even take advantage of position unless he has two high cards or a decently high pocket pair. Against these opponents, you should play aggressively pre-flop and try to steal as many blinds as possible, but steer clear whenever they show any sign of aggression. There is no mistake in treating them like rocks, because on those rare occasions when these players come out firing, they probably have a set of strong cards to back them up.

Weak tight aggressive players, are perhaps the most numerous opponents at low limits and this is something that won’t change regardless of how much online Texas hold ‘em with fold. The reason for their lack of initiative is the fact that they don’t know exactly how to play tight aggressive poker, and they don’t have the resources to be competitive. The genuine TAG will have no hesitations in making a sizable bet, the reraise from out of position or even go all in when he has confidence in his cards.

By contrast, a week tight aggressive player will rather fold a decent hand when confronted with a reraise, even if all the facts suggest a different approach. Their main problem is that even though they have the theoretical knowledge to play better poker, they lack the experience and the cash to make the right choices. Don’t play overly aggressive against them, but whenever you sense weakness make sure to put them to the test because in many cases they would rather fold their cards.

The veteran tight aggressive players are still present that lower limits but their number has shrunk significantly. The explanation is obvious, because any good TAG will sooner or later make enough money to claw his way up to superior limits and only those extremely unlucky or new to the game are still struggling at small tables. At medium and high stakes, tight aggressive players can be more than a nuisance, because they don’t bleed chips and can always put opponents between a rock and a hard place.

A TAG, will place the emphasis on position rather than cards and will not allow opponents to steal their blinds or push them around. They don’t get involved in many pots, but when they do they bet aggressively and you have to accept the fact that the amounts you are expected to pay will grown dramatically on the next street. Good TAG players understand the importance of position and are reluctant to play against an opponent who showcases confidence and will act after them, so take advantage of this tendency.

There are several reasons for why many beginners prefer to play at shorthanded tables when they make the switch to online Texas hold ‘em. One of the arguments in favor of these tables is that many of them are experienced in competing against fewer opponents, in home games. The fact that there are fewer players to worry about when betting or raising means that the risks of running into trouble are significantly reduced. On the other hand, the size of the pots is less impressive than in full ring tables and losing a few small pots can offset all the previous profits.

Some powerful observations about how beginners are supposed to play at shorthanded tables are made by the author at http://www.pokersavvy.com/poker-articles/tips-for-playing-shorthanded. For loose aggressive players this is the ideal play round, because they have more opportunities to put their skills to the test. Raising small amounts often and forcing your opponents to react in one way or the other, translates into additional action which is sought after by LAG players. If things go wrong and some of the opponents fire back with sizable raises, it is much easier to back off when you don’t have a lot to lose.

Last but definitely not least those who decide to play at shorthanded tables should take the issue of stealing blinds very seriously. With the hand frequency being considerably higher than in full ring tables, you can’t afford to bleed blinds and lose small pots to players from late position. If you know how to project the right image at a table where only six players participate, you can get away with stealing blinds and these small amounts accumulate quickly.

Some cards look much better than they actually are, and players tend to outplay their hands when they are dealt such cards. Perhaps the best example are the AQ and AJ, since they can drag one to the gutter if played poorly and against a perceptive opponent. Many players see their bankrolls vanishing before their eyes, after they go all in with such a hand against an opponent which holds a middle pair or an AK. The best case scenario is to force a coin flip, something that is appropriate for beginners playing against better opponents, but not the other way around.

The question is how are middle and under pairs supposed to be played, and the answer has to be formulated in complete accord with a position analysis. Small pairs are those ranging from 2 to 8, while nines, tens and jacks are neither pairs, and each of them need to be played very carefully. Just like the AQ and AJ, such hands look stronger than they actually are, and this becomes obvious when pit against two over cards. Even the celebrated pair of jacks is more frequently losing than winning large pots, and things usually turn sour as soon as the flop is dealt.

If you were reckless enough to play them very aggressively pre-flop from early position and the flop brings a Queen, King or ace, you have your hands tied. You can’t afford to make a sizable bet without risking to become pot committed, and you can’t check and allowed the opponents to take initiative. These cards have to be played aggressively when you are the last to speak, or call a small pre-flop raises hoping to keep the trips.

Many players are wondering whether it is worth making the transition from short to big stack strategy and some are even contemplating the most effective ways to do so. While it is perfectly possible to shift from one style of play to another, there are a couple of distinctions that need to be made before attempting anything. For starters it is important to remember that the transition should be made over the course of time, and never during a single poker session. Many beginners commit this mistake and start playing as short stackers, then shift to big stack strategy after they double up following a successful all-in.

This is a mistake because they let enthusiasm overwhelm them and assume that they can repeat the performance with another all-in. The temptation is considerable, because a successful attempt would mean that in a relatively short period of time the player could have four times the amount he sat down at the table with. What usually happens is that a short stacker who turns into a big stack in a matter of hands, is no longer going to benefit from the same action as he did at the beginning of the game. Opponents will be more careful against him and only go all in with monster hands.

What usually happens is that a short stacker is lucky enough to double up following his initial plan, becomes the victim of the rapid transition to big stack strategy. If you want to explore new opportunities and play a more complex style of Texas hold’em, then you need to be patient and do things one step at a time. The first thing on your list should be mastering short stack strategy, and only after your bankroll and experience justifies the transition, start using big stack strategy.
